Text Box: Vargas repertoire. Among the orchestras not as well known to tangophiles outside of Argentina, pianist/bandleader Angel D’Agostino and vocalist Angel Vargas (“the two angels of tango”) are well loved by Porteños. The three selections here, the tangos “Tres Esquinas” and “El Jacare” and the milonga “Compadreando,” are sweetly melodic and the lyrics contain the nostalgia for one’s birthplace, neighborhood and past loves that are the hallmark of the classic tangos.
Duvall’s affection for the Carlos Di Sarli orchestra is clear, but instead of sticking to the better known, slower Di Sarli hits (here represented by the gorgeous instrumental “Bahia Blanca”), he includes three up-tempo tunes from Di Sarli’s earlier period. The three 1940 recordings, “En Un Beso La Vida,” “El Cielo En Tus Ojos” (both with wonderful vocals by Roberto Rufino) and “La Cachila,” all have a supremely danceable rhythm. But again, it’s the sweetness/bitter-sweetness of the melodies that strike you.
And for sweetness, can anything top Ricardo Tanturi’s “Una Emocion,” with it’s vocal by the sublime Enrique Campos? With its mistily nostalgic lyric, it sums up in one song “the feeling” that is tango. If one can say that a song smiles, this one smiles with a hint of tears in its eyes. Can any tango lover hear this song and not exhale a highly satisfied sigh at the end?
In another nod to a lesser-known orchestra, Duvall includes a driving version of “Racing Club” by violinist Alfredo Gobbi and his orchestra.
Also represented on the soundtrack is the original music written for the film by Luis Bacalov, winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Score for “Il Postino.” A native of Argentina, Bacalov’s five original pieces for the film offer more than a passing nod to the modern, tango-flavored jazz of Astor Piazzola, with whom Bacalov worked. “Building the Bullet,”“First Kill” and “Second Kill,” are taut and compelling; “Landing in Buenos Aires” is full of  anticipation and excitement; “Seduction” is lushly romantic and—once again—sweet.
Duvall and Bacalov have done a masterful job of assembling the music for this film. The sound track will be a wonderful introduction to the “real” tango for the uninitiated, as well as an enjoyable addition to any tango lover’s collection.

RCA Victor, 09026-64023-2
Robert Duvall’s long-awaited film, “Assassination Tango,” has finally arrived, and with it the sound track CD on RCA Victor. A collection of 14 songs, the sound track is Duvall’s valentine to the Golden Era of Tango.
Duvall’s understanding of and love for classic tango dance music runs deep, and is more than evident here. Rather than fall into the trap of most tango shows and several previous films, he and collaborator Luis Bacalov deftly avoid the clichés. Instead of stacking the deck with Pugliese and Piazzola, they pay homage to some of the lesser-known gems of the genre.
Duvall likes to quote the late and greatly loved milonguero, Fino, who said that “tango is sweetness.”  Here, Duvall has opted for that sweetness, using several selections from the D'Agostino-
